This single shot of Vicious and Rottern translates their personas excellent, it shows theyounger lighter side of when John, in particular, enjoyed being in the Sex Pistols. The composition is leveled and even and the firced flash makes the image crisp and clear. The use of black and white makes you focus on their expersions and features more, instead of it getting caught up in the colours. Which makes it more effective.

Overall i would say this is my favourite image Gruen has taken. It expresses, like the single shot of Rottern and vicious, their personailtes and how even though they were the public enemy for 'Thatcher's Britain', they were still young messing around. Their pasty faces work really well for contrast and the lowlights and darker shawdows excentuate and bring the photo to life.

Bob Gruen

Bob Gruen docuemented many bands and celebrities from the 70's onwards, from Queen, the Clash to Debbie Harry (Blondie) and the Sex Pistols. His photos depict moments and emotions in their lives. They emit a raw, character filled side to the artists. Not the stage preformers, but the people themselves. My personal favourites are the Sex Pistols photos, in particular the ones that focus on Sid and Johnny. Gruen captures the punk apperance and showman of the two. But he also reflects the teenagers they were, with lack of mannors and common sense; but thats what they had. the grain in the pictures really appeals to me, it gives a vintage asthestic to the pieces as well as creating a form of depth to the images, with the use of black and white negatives

Harold Royston Vincent (Grandad Roy)

My grandad Roy has always taken pictures as a hobby, mainly all family oriantaed ones. Hes taken some truley beautiful photos in him time, he even makes my dad look good in them! But what I really like about my Grandads techinque is how he captures the rawnes of an expression. Or clicks a moment in everyday life for us Vincents and Bennetts. I would say if I had to catogrize his images I would label them as a form of documentary. As he is visualy documenting parts of our familys lives. He hasnt/will never claim to be a photographer but has always simply enjoyed it and that what I think photography should be all about, creating something that makes you and others feel something. What ever you want that emotion to be.

In this case Im using as an example of his documentation is the birth of my Brother Zakariah, or Zak as we call him. He was born on the 11th of May 1988. And as he was the first child of my parents, it was something that obviously meant the world to our family. As Zak means the world to us. But for those who couldnt be there to experince this all my Grandad made a photo album dating from before my brothers birth to after his Christening. Who would have thought twenty-six years later I would have been using it for my photography course.

The image quality is much better if you enlarge the image by just giving the photo a little click and then pressing the arrows to move onto the next image.

The photo's channel the purpose of them in the first place. Their sentimentality can relate to almost most people who have been in the postion of a new addition comming along. All the photo's are raw and are completley real. That's what I really liked about my grandads work. He captured the little things and the placements of all events leading up to, during and after the birth. The images vary between artificial lighting from the flash of the camera and natual lighting.

My favourtie image from my Grandad's work is the one insert to the left above. It converys everything to me what the parenthood is all about. With the tiered bags around both of their eyes, from my mum giving birth and my dad rushing to the hostpital because he was doing night shifts at the police station. Yet after all the stress they're smile's are genuine and almost infer a sense of relivment yet joy. In my opnion, my Grandad did exactly have any techinque in mind other to get all three of the Vincent's in focus (well my mother was a Bennett at the time) but capture the delicness of Zakariah, but the contenment of Amanda and Marc.

About three years ago this summer, when my mum, farther and I were in Devon I took this image. And after flicking through the images they both still have the same  spontanious smile, that isn't forced. It's natural real happiness. (even though my mum was facing the complete wrong way). I love the colours in this image. they're so vibrant and it makes me feel warm inside from simply looking at it, from the warm colours, to the warm expressions on my parents face 24 years on.
